Supermarine Spitfire I
Recognise the wing; remember the people.
Original stylised recognition graphic. Not a scale plan or an archival photograph.
The historical setting
Production Spitfires entered service in August 1938. The Mk I was part of Britain’s air defence during the Battle of Britain. Its place in memory should sit alongside the wider network of people, other aircraft and infrastructure involved.
Look closely
The elliptical wing is the recognisable clue in our stylised silhouette. A museum visit also reveals proportions that flat pictures conceal: the relationship between engine, pilot and wing, and how little space surrounded the person flying it.
A careful way to compare
Spitfire variants changed engines, wings and equipment. We name the Mk I here and avoid borrowing performance figures from a later mark. Admiring workmanship does not require treating wartime losses as entertainment; read the individual aircraft and crew stories too.
